Xiao Yong, Head of Energy & Resources practice, China, practices in the areas of corporate and M&A, with a focus on the energy and natural resources, mining and metals, oil and gas and technology sectors.

Mr. Xiao has significant experience in assisting clients with cross-border transactions. Mr. Xiao represents Chinese companies, including a number of China’s largest state-owned businesses on international mergers and acquisitions and foreign direct investments. He also acts for multinational companies on PRC-related corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investment, private equity, venture capital, regulatory, and general corporate matters. In addition, his practice includes seeking approvals from high-level government agencies and conducting anti-monopoly filings leveraging his rich resources and experience.

Mr. Xiao has been described as a “prominent figure in the [energy] market, recognized for his abundant experience advising Chinese state-owned entities on overseas investments”, who "has a very deep understanding of commercial law in China, and also a sense for the regulatory environment" in Chambers Asia-Pacific Guide, where he has been listed as a leading lawyer for energy and natural resources in China since 2012. He is also recommended in Chambers Global Guide 2016, The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2017-2018, IFLR1000 2016-2017, and Who’s Who Legal 2016.

Work experience

Mr. Xiao joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2021. Before that he worked as a legal counsel and partner, senior partner respectively,  at 2 renowned international law firms. Mr. Xiao was also a legal counsel at another global law firm. In addition, he once worked at an FDI-related department. 

Mr . Xiao obtained his LLB degree from Wuhan University School of Law, and his LLM from the University of California, Berkeley.
