Areas of Practice
Dr Jerry Liu has extensive theoretical knowledge and practical experience across patents, copyrights and trademarks, intellectual property litigation, anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting, and intellectual property licensing and transactions. He has a particular focus on entertainment and media, computer, internet and information technology industries, where he has developed significant hands-on experience.
Dr Liu has assisted international industry associations and organizations in formulating intellectual property strategies and anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting measures. He has represented Fortune 500 companies and leading Silicon Valley technology firms in negotiating and drafting cross-border agreements involving copyrights, trademarks, and patents. Furthermore, he has provided legal services in areas such as entertainment and media law, ecommerce, and internet-related intellectual property. Several significant intellectual property litigation cases led by Dr Liu have been recognised among “Top 10 Intellectual Property Cases of the Year” by the Supreme People’s Court.
Dr Liu is also a fellow at the Center for Internet and Society of Stanford Law School. His research is centred on the interplay between intellectual property protection, technological innovation, and the advancement of cultural industries. Many of his articles have been quoted by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit as persuasive authority on fair use, and included in the suggested readings of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He regularly receives invitations from the United States Copyright Office, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and WIPO to speak at their events.
Work experience
Dr Liu joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2024. Before that, he worked at Baker McKenzie and Jones Day. He also served as the Director of Intellectual Property and Technology Law Programs at the University of San Francisco School of Law and as a professor at the UNH School of Law.
Dr Liu obtained his J.S.D. degree from Stanford Law School and his Ph.D. degree in Intellectual Property Law from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
He is admitted to practice law in California and New York (United States) and is also licensed in China.
His working languages are Chinese and English.
