Ma Yanhui (Edward) specialises in trade, shipping, insurance, corporate disputes and cross-border dispute resolution.
Mr. Ma's experience and passion is unique in his field. Starting with shipping law practice, a niche area known for its complexity and professionalism, he expertizes in all areas of admiralty and maritime law, both wet and dry. With LL.B. degrees in both Chinese law and English law, he has deep knowledge and understanding in the international legal regime for trade, shipping, insurance, financing and insolvency. In particular, Mr. Ma is recognised for his expertise in dealing with cross-border disputes and legal risks. Mr. Ma worked for ten years as in-house counsel and 20 years in private practice. It is this rare combination of experience and his ability to calmly assess and find the best path forward that makes Mr. Ma a highly valued partner to his clients.

Mr. Ma has advised on a number of significant and influential matters, including the NGO claims and fishery claims arising from Penglai 19-3 offshore platform oil spill incident, the reinsurance dispute arising from SK Hynix fire accident, series of lawsuits against Qingdao Port for false warehouse receipts and financing fraud, the bankruptcy reorganization and disposal of ships of Singapore SOC, and the insolvency and bankruptcy proceedings of India's Reliance Communication Limited. His excellent vision of the overall situation and sound judgment have enabled him to get right to the point, and put forward creative insights and solutions.
Mr. Ma is regularly recommended as a "Ranked lawyer", a highly recommended lawyer and a Leading Lawyer by Chambers Asia Pacific, The Legal 500, Asialaw Profiles, respectively. He is described by Chambers Asia Pacific Guide as "very analytical and very, very thorough and precise" when handling cases.
Work experience
Mr. Ma joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2010. Prior to that, he worked with China Ocean Shipping Co. (COSCO) and China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association and was a partner of a firm in Beijing. He has previously participated in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Conference as a member of the official Chinese Delegation for making international maritime conventions.
Mr. Ma graduated from Dalian Maritime University with a LL.B degree in 1991 and qualified as a PRC lawyer in 1996. In 2000, he passed the Common Professional Examination (CPE) and received a Post-graduate Diploma with commendation in English and Hong Kong Law from the University of Hong Kong. In 2001, he obtained an LLB degree with honors (2nd class, 1st division) from the Manchester Metropolitan University.
