Chengyan (Tony) Du specializes in intellectual property disputes, involving patents, trade secrets, copyrights, as well as unfair competition claims.

Equipped with a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering and two master's degrees in law, Tony has provided intellectual property legal services to multinational corporations and Chinese enterprises. The technologies he has covered include electronics, information technology, open-source software, data privacy, materials technology, chemical technology, and display technology. Tony has served clients from various industries, including semiconductors, communications, automotive, smart manufacturing, chemicals, and software.

Tony is dedicated to providing clients with comprehensive intellectual property services. He has been involved in several notable cases, including trade secret infringement cases, malicious IP litigation between Chinese domestic and multinational chemical companies, and patent infringement cases among Chinese internet companies. These cases were nominated as representative intellectual property cases by the Supreme People’s Court in 2017, 2020, and 2024, and were recognized as Deal of the Year by China Business Law Journal in 2016 and 2021.

Tony also has extensive experience in intellectual property consulting, providing services such as IP due diligence and licensing negotiations for domestic and international companies.

Work experience

Tony joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2015. Before that, he worked at Sony Corporation, where he served as a patent engineer at the Sony Tokyo office, responsible for patent applications, portfolio management, infringement, and invalidity analysis for home entertainment products.

Tony graduated from Shanghai University in 2008 and 2011 with a bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering and a master's degree in law. He also graduated from Stanford University in 2023 with a master's degree in law (LL.M.).

Tony obtained his Chinese legal professional qualification in 2010 and his Chinese patent attorney qualification in 2014.

Tony’s working languages are Chinese, English, and Japanese.
