Donald Chen’s principal areas of practice include corporate compliance, cross-border investment and mergers & acquisitions, listings, maritime law, and media and entertainment.
With over 30 years’ experience, Mr. Chen regularly advises a number of well-known multinationals and domestic large- and medium-sized enterprises.
Mr. Chen has extensive experience in cross-border investment and M&A and corporate listings. He advises on foreign enterprises’ investments and equity acquisitions in China, as well as Chinese companies’ going global.
He is familiar with compliance matters and international commercial and maritime litigation and arbitration. He has handled a large number of cross-border dispute resolution and compliance investigation cases.
He was recognised as a “Leading Talent of Changning District” in Shanghai in 2017, and an “Advanced Individual in Shanghai Judicial Administration” in 2018. He was also selected to the “National Talents Pool of a Thousand Foreign-Related Lawyers” by the Ministry of Justice in 2018, and to the “Shanghai Foreign-Related Legal Talents Pool” in 2019.
Work experience
Mr. Chen joined King & Wood Mallesons as a partner in 2006. Prior to that, he practised at a law firm in Zhejiang province in 1990, and went to work at a law firm in Osaka, Japan in 1994. In 1998-2001, he practised at another domestic law firm, and in 2001-2006, he worked as a partner at another renowned domestic law firm.
Mr. Chen received his LL.B. from East China University of Politics and Law in 1990, and his LL.M. from the Faculty of Law of Kyoto University in 1998.
He was admitted to practise the PRC law in 1991, and was licensed to practise the PRC securities law by CSRC and the Ministry of Justice in 1999.
He is proficient in Chinese, English, and Japanese.
