Areas of practice

Mr. Hou Peng specialises in cross-border financial, investment and trade dispute resolution, covering complex civil and commercial litigation, international commercial and investment arbitration, cross-border bankruptcy reorganisation and liquidation.  

He has extensive experience in representing clients in disputes on investment, financing and M&A, insurance and reinsurance, government franchise, real estate development and exit. He is adept at utilising a combination of settlement and negotiation, mediation and arbitration to handle special and major risk response matters involving administrative supervision, criminal investigation, discipline inspection and supervision, and other review procedures.

Mr. Hou is a pioneering scholar and practitioner in Chinese Mainland in the field of third-party funding (TPF) research, with ground-breaking practical experience in legal financing. He has provided research, analysis and rulemaking advice for several prestigious arbitration institutions in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. He has facilitated the introduction of TPF services for parties involved in cross-border disputes, offering legal and financial services for resolving cross-border disputes and dealing with overseas distressed assets.

Mr. Hou has represented both Chinese and international clients in hundreds of commercial litigation and arbitration cases before the Supreme People’s Court and lower-level Chinese courts, as well as the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), and other well-known arbitration institutions in Chinese Mainland.

Mr. Hou is currently a director of China Society of Private International Law, a postdoctoral researcher at Renmin University of China, a senior consultant of the International Economics and Technology Institute, Development Research Center of the State Council, and a consultant of the Cross-Science Society of Beijing Association for Science and Technology.

Work experience

Mr. Hou joined King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) in 2018. Before joining KWM, he worked at a leading Chinese law firm for years.

Mr. Hou obtained his LL.B., LL.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of International Relations, Wuhan University, and China University of Political Science and Law, respectively. He also participated in the doctoral program at Boston University School of Law.

Mr. Hou is qualified to practice law in the PRC. His working languages are Chinese and English.
