July 13, 2023, Vienna. At the invitation of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), Ms. Meng Su, partner of King & Wood Mallesons, delivered a speech at the UNCITRAL Colloquium on Climate Change and the Law of International Trade (the Colloquium).
The Colloquium, an important part of the fifty-sixth session of the UNCITRAL secretariat, aimed to explore ways to contribute to the international community’s efforts to combat climate change.
Ms. Su’s speech centered around China’s efforts in promoting the development of carbon markets and improving the disclosure of carbon market data transparency. Ms. Meng Su also covered the developments in China’s voluntary carbon market, foreign investment in China’s carbon market, carbon financial products and carbon inclusion for individuals. These topics have been of particular interest globally given China’s laws and regulations and ongoing improvements in the areas of carbon market and corporate environmental data disclosure.
In her speech, Ms. Su stated that the expansion and internationalisation of China’s carbon market has set higher requirements for Chinese corporations’ carbon emission reduction and environmental data disclosure, and that China’s efforts in promoting voluntary emission reduction and carbon data transparency are critical to achieving a sustainable future.
King & Wood Mallesons is at the forefront of China’s 30-60 target (China’s commitment to hit peak emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060). Passionate about combating climate change and sharing environmental responsibilities, we will continue to actively contribute to the development and opening of China’s carbon market, development of carbon finance and derivatives, and improvements of the standard and certification systems for carbon data disclosure.
