Junichi Yamazaki


Areas of Practice

Junichi Yamazaki specializes in intellectual property rights, international transactions, corporate law, civil litigation and international arbitration.

With respect to the intellectual property law area, he has provided extensive services for his clients including representation in numerous infringement litigations and invalidity proceedings involving patents and other IPs and in negotiations with domestic and overseas counterparty for license and technical tie-up agreements.  The technologies having been involved included machine tools, electric-electronic devices, communication systems, broadcasting, software, printing, civil engineering and construction, chemical products, food, cosmetics.  He also has ample experience in copyright and moral rights issues primarily in software, music and cinematographic works as well as performer’s rights. 

He also serves as retained counsel for not only listed companies but also small-and-medium start-up companies and renders regular legal services such as counselling and drafting contracts and other legal documents.  

In international arbitration, he has served as chair arbitrator, party-appointed arbitrator and institution-appointed sole arbitrator in ICC and JCAA arbitrations.  

During his career, Junichi Yamazaki held posts of President and Administration Committee Chair of Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Center, President of Japan Licensing Executives Society, Legal Counsel for Licensing Executives Society International, Counsel and Auditor of Japan Music Publishers Association, Intellectual Property Committee Chair of Inter-Pacific Bar Association, Lecturer of Tokyo University of Science, Graduate School for Management of Intellectual Property, Lecturer for Japan Patent Attorneys Association’s Training Course for Representation in Infringement Litigations, Expert for Customs Control Procedure Against Intellectual Property Infringing Articles, etc.

Work Experience

Junichi Yamazaki joined King & Wood Mallesons Tokyo office in 2016. Prior to that, he served at Miyake, Kitamura & Tanaka in 1978, and as a partner of Miyake & Yamazaki in 1991.

Junichi Yamazaki graduated from Tokyo University, Faculty of Economics, in 1976.  He was admitted as a lawyer in 1978 (Dai-ni Tokyo Bar Association). 

His working languages are Japanese, English and Chinese
