Ms. Du specializes in corporate, dispute resolution and litigation, in particular, real estate development and construction projects, tax planning, and private and family wealth inheritance.

She has practiced for near 20 years since she started her career in 1999. She conducts in-depth research and provides a full range of services in the real estate development, construction projects, and land tenure. With profound legal background and customer-first professionalism, she has represented clients in a variety of civil, commercial and administrative cases, accumulating extensive experience in litigation and dispute resolution. In addition, Ms. Du provides a full spectrum of corporate and commercial expertise, ranging from equity structuring, governance structure and system development, day-to-day legal issues, business contract review, risk control, shareholder disputes, absorption, merger and separation, capital and share increase, investment and financing to dissolution, liquidation and termination of a company. In recent years, she has been committed to the development of new practice areas such as corporate tax-related disputes, private client property risk prevention, asset allocation plans, and private wealth inheritance planning.

With her demonstrated expertise and broad experience, Ms. Du advises key clients including large- and medium-sized SOEs, listed companies, central and local energy groups, new energy project investors, real estate developers and large comprehensive constructors. Her typical representations include:

  • A Hubei-based petrochemical group on the acquisition of external companies and the merger, liquidation and deregistration of internal companies. She provided a full range of services from plan design to implementation (including land assets, factory equipment, employee transfer, and tax planning), helping achieve millions of tax savings and winning praise from the client;

  • A Guizhou-based real estate company on a shareholder disqualification dispute and an infringement on corporate property worth of over RMB 100 million in four rounds of court proceedings, with a complete success and all claims supported by the Higher People’s Court of Guizhou Province;

  • A Shenzhen-based listed company on a dispute over the construction price of over RMB 200 million. In the process of prompt and effective pre-litigation property preservation, she forced the adverse party to make a compromise, settling the dispute with a satisfactory result for the client;

  • A listed company on a dispute over real estate cooperation. Her pre-litigation property preservation and effective mediation helped the client recover a compensation of RMB 35 million in a lump sum;

  • A water supplier on a dispute over farmland occupation taxes, with a fine of over RMB 4.6 million in late fees exempted; and

  • A real estate company wholly owned by a central SOE on assets disposal, payment of overdue taxes and other special non-litigation services. She helped the client reasonably and lawfully save a total of over RMB 30 million of taxes and late fees.

With more than 16 years of law firm management and leadership experience, Ms. Du is good at innovating comprehensive legal service products and leading the team to work together and provides clients with one-stop solutions and value-added legal service experience. Thus, she has won a good reputation in the legal industry. In particular, she has conducted systematic research and practice in the emerging complex law & finance fields, such as private wealth management and inheritance, family trusts, and charitable trusts. She formed a team of wealth management lawyers and a team of finance and tax lawyers in Hainan Province to provide high-net-worth clients with tailored quality services and finance- and tax-centric comprehensive property allocation and inheritance plans.

Ms. Du successively served as a director of the Hainan Lawyers Association for three terms of office and the vice chairperson of its Civil, Commercial and Administrative Professional Committee. Currently, she is an arbitrator of the Hainan International Arbitration Court, the executive director and deputy secretary-general of the China-ASEAN Legal Cooperation Center, and the deputy director of the Foreign Exchange Promotion Committee of the Hainan Lawyers Association. Moreover, she is the legal consultant of Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province. She has received honors such as Hainan's Best Integrity Lawyer, Advanced Judicial System Worker, and Excellent Arbitrator.

Work Experience

Ms. Du joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2019. Prior to that, she founded her own firm, Hainan Du Yu Law Firm in 2004, which was restructured into a partnership firm, Hainan Jiafa Law Firm in July 2010. She served as the managing and chief partner of the restructured firm. In 2017, Ms. Du founded the Haikou office of the Beijing-based Yingke Law Firm and served as the director of the management committee of the firm and the chief partner of the office. Moreover, she once served as the PRC director of Yingke Law Firm and an international partner of the firm.

Ms. Du obtained her LL.M. in Civil and Commercial Law from China University of Political Science and Law, her M.S. in Finance from Xiamen University, and her B.A. in English from Yan'an University. She was admitted to practice law in the PRC in 2000 and has become a professional lawyer with a combined knowledge of law, finance and foreign languages.
