Liam Burgess

Liam Burgess is a partner in our Sydney office specialising in dispute resolution. Liam advises financial institutions and corporate clients on class actions, regulatory inquiries and commercial litigation. Liam also advises on public law issues and chairs KWM’s human rights law group in Sydney.

Liam has been recognised as a ‘Rising Star’ for class actions in the Legal 500 since 2019.

Liam’s work includes:

  • Acting for Westpac in the successful defence of ASIC’s ‘Wagyu and Shiraz’ civil penalty proceedings in relation to responsible lending, described as “the most consequential piece of litigation the banking sector has faced for decades." AFR (10 May 2019)

  • Advising Suncorp in relation to a COVID-19 business interruption insurance dispute (ongoing)

  • Successfully resolving an ASIC investigation in relation to alleged conflicted remuneration for an Australian investment platform provider

  • Successfully defending class action proceedings against Westpac relating to Westpac’s mortgage lending practices 

  • Advising a private health insurer in relation to a commercial dispute (ongoing)

  • Defending National Australia Bank in a consumer credit insurance class action brought by Slater & Gordon

  • Reviewing Australian human rights obligations for international social media company

  • Acting for Westpac in class action proceedings, arising from the collapse of Storm Financial

  • Advising Citigroup in the successful defence of a commercial dispute arising out of the collapse of ABC Learning
