Mr. Zhang Shouzhi specializes in arbitration, litigation and alternative dispute resolution. His experience spans a broad range of commercial disputes including those in relation to trade, investment, finance, energy, infrastructure construction intellectual property and product liability.

Mr. Zhang commenced legal practice from 1988. He has since represented multi-national companies, major state-owned enterprises, state-owned banks and foreign banks in more than 180 litigations, out of which over 120 cases were foreign-related. He has also represented clients in more than 130 arbitrations under a variety of arbitration rules, including CIETAC, BAC, ICC, SCC, HKIAC, SIAC, FOSFA, SAL, GAFTA and ICA. The cases Mr. Zhang represented involved disputes relating to cross-border trade and investment, equity, energy, infrastructure finance, construction contracts, intellectual property, product liability, international commercial loans and foreign debt guarantees, negotiable instrument, letter of credit, bill of lading, as well as recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards in China.

Mr. Zhang has served as legal counsel to multi-national companies, major state-owned enterprises, state-owned banks and foreign banks, advising on various matters including investment, project negotiation, financing, and international project construction contracting. He has also provided legal advice for establishment of more than 30 foreign-invested companies, major infrastructure projects, and more than 10 contracts for import and export of large machinery.

Mr. Zhang has a wealth of practical experience in international cooperation on carbon emission reduction, especially in negotiation and dispute resolution relating to purchase and sale agreements of emission reductions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the voluntary emission reduction mechanism.

Mr. Zhang has been repeatedly recognized by Chambers Asia Pacific as a Band 1 lawyer in China in the areas of dispute resolution and international arbitration since 2009, and ranked as the “Eminent Practitioners” in dispute resolution (including litigation and international arbitration) by Chambers for 10 consecutive years from 2015 to 2024. In Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2018 edition), he was recommended in the field of dispute resolution. He has also been ranked the 2015 “Lawyer of the Year: Dispute Resolution-Litigation” by China Law & Practice (CLP) and the “A-List Legal Elite” for 2018 by China Business Law Journal.

Work experience

Mr. Zhang Shouzhi joined King & Wood Mallesons in 1999.  Before joining King & Wood Mallesons, he worked at the International Practice Department of the Shandong Gold-Bridge Law Office.

Mr. Zhang obtained his LL.B from the East China University of Political Science and Law. He has trained at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in the London Office of Herbert Smith and in Essex Court Barristers’ Chamber.

Mr. Zhang is on the panel of arbitrators of CIETAC, SHIAC, SCIA and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
