Based in Shanghai, Mr. Ma counsels clients on intricate matters at the intersection of intellectual property (IP) and cross-border technology trade. His expertise encompasses local IP compliance, cross-jurisdiction IP management, and IP monetization/commercialization. He possesses deep industry knowledge in sectors including new energy batteries and vehicles (NEVs), new materials, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, and the food industry. Mr. Ma also advises on data protection and cross-border data transfer issues within these sectors.
Clients, particularly high-tech companies, engage Mr. Ma for his profound understanding of China’s IP requirements from an investor’s perspective. He advises on R&D infringement risks, IP portfolio management and prosecution strategies, ownership arrangements, trade secrets protection, and incentive mechanisms.
In global transactions and investments, Mr. Ma addresses critical needs such as IP due diligence, freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses, IP risk assessments, and technology evaluations. With over 15 years of experience, he has advised on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), listings, private placements, joint ventures, technology transfers, and the establishment of local R&D centers for foreign investors. He is adept at both evaluating IP assets for investors and assisting clients with listings from an IP standpoint.
Work experience
Mr. Ma returned back to King & Wood Mallesons in 2022.
He received his B.S. in Biology from Fudan University in 2002, M.Phil. from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004, and M.S. from University of Maryland, College Park in 2009.
He is admitted to practice in the PRC as a patent agent.
