A dedicated professional team to assist clients with new challenges in environmental law matters

Great changes have taken place in environmental policies, environmental legislation, environmental supervision and law enforcement, and environmental judicature, which raise new challenges for enterprises that produce, operate or invest in projects in China.  King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) has a dedicated environmental law team, advising clients on this fast-changing area.

KWM partners have participated in the legislative process of major environmental laws in China, such as the Environmental Protection Law, the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention and Control Law, the Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law, and the Environmental Protection Tax Law. They also proposed legislative bills on drafting and amending laws including the Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Law, the Ecological Compensation Law and the Environmental Impact Assessment Law.

KWM partners have been engaged by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) as the legal counsel to help review administrative regulations and normative documents, advise on significant decisions issued by the MEE, and review and advise on significant administrative penalties imposed by the MEE.

We advise multinational corporations, large state-owned enterprises, listed companies and industry-leading enterprises on environmental law consultation, compliance audit, establishment of firewall to prevent environmental liabilities, as well as hearings of administrative penalties, reconsideration, and litigation, environmental pro bono litigation, ecological and environmental damage compensation litigation and environmental criminal cases.

We cooperate with environmental scientists, environmental jurists, and experts from the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences to provide solutions to various environmental technical and legal issues.

KWM has been ranked as the Band 1 law firm in the environmental law practice in the Chambers Asia Pacific Guide for many years.
