Chinese Premier Li Qiang paid a four-day visit to Australia from 15 to 18 June 2024, making stops in Adelaide, Canberra and Perth, where he met with government and business representatives. Sue Kench, Global Chief Executive of King & Wood Mallesons (KWM), and David Olsson, KWM International Director, attended the luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister of Australia at Parliament House to welcome Premier Li Qiang.

On 18 June, Premier Li Qiang and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese jointly attended and addressed the Seventh China-Australia CEO Roundtable Meeting held in Perth, Australia. About 30 leaders from the Chinese and Australian Chambers of Commerce and enterprises attended the event. Sue Kench was invited to attend the roundtable and spoke as a representative of the legal sector.

Sue Kench stated that the rule of law is the foundation for building trust in transactions and enhancing confidence in trade, investment and even economic prosperity. From a practical perspective, the legal professions of both countries should be more involved to understand each other better, share best practices and identify opportunities for collaboration.

As the first international law firm headquartered in Asia and a bridge between Australia and China, KWM has made significant efforts to promote cooperation between the two countries by leveraging its leading edge in the legal services market of both countries, as well as its in-depth understanding of Eastern and Western cultures and markets. This has strongly supported the development of enterprises from both countries in the Chinese, Australian, and global markets.

Over the years, KWM China and Australia offices have worked together to provide cross-jurisdictional and one-stop legal services for many large cross-border transactions or disputes in such sectors as energy, chemicals, logistics, engineering and construction, and education. The two teams also conduct in-depth research on cutting-edge legal issues such as artificial intelligence, financial technology, ESG and climate change, or common issues facing human development. They aim to provide innovative, advanced and comprehensive legal solutions for clients around the world.

KWM has more than 3,000 lawyers across 18 offices in China and offices in the United States, Japan, Australia and Singapore, as well as a service network covering Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.
