Ms. Alicia Zhang specialises in general intellectual property, commercialisation of scientific and research achievements, and the transaction and strategic management of data and other digital assets, especially in legal matters in cutting-edge high-tech industries such as metaverse, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics.

Ms. Zhang has in-depth research and long-term experience in the high-tech field. She has been providing comprehensive legal services for clients in a variety of high-tech fields, including scientific and research achievement commercialisation structuring (covering technology investment, technology transfer, horizontal technology alliance, vertical technology licensing, etc.), industry-university-research-application integration, talent recruitment planning, know-how risk prevention, and innovative business models. 

Ms. Zhang is familiar with the license chain, the license scope, rights protection and commercial operation relating to IP transactions. Leveraging her years of experience, she offers clients optimal transaction solutions. She has also assisted high-tech industrial parks, R&D institutions and universities in their intellectual management and industry-university-research-application integration projects. Ms. Zhang has also advised high-tech enterprises on compliance and financing of scientific and research achievement commercialisation, providing a full range of services in areas including management, risk control, layout and planning, operations and transactions, as well as fostering technology innovation capabilities related to IP.

Ms. Zhang has extensive experience in legal matters in cutting-edge high-tech industries such as metaverse, blockchain technology application, AI, and robotics. She has counselled many clients on digital transformation, data transactions, and circulation of digital assets. Well-versed in various legal matters and innovative models in these industries, she has provided a wide range of legal services to many leading enterprises, covering the application and regulation of emerging technologies, algorithmic compliance, AI compliance and security, and the development of a technology ethics review system. Ms. Zhang assists clients in resolving legal issues during their business development, including the provision of legal advice, opinions, and assistance in transaction negotiations. Ms. Zhang also supports clients in developing an overall compliance system from multiple perspectives, such as business, IP, security, and risk prevention.

Ms. Zhang has been fully involved in the work in relation to Shanghai Data Exchange and Jiangsu Big Data Exchange. She has long been exploring and researching the theoretical bases, management models, pricing mechanisms, transaction design and product innovation of data and other digital assets. She is dedicated to providing optimal solutions for data element transactions and the circulation and application of digital assets.

Ms. Zhang was recognised as one of the first “Top Ten Youth” in the Shanghai Judicial Administration System and one of the seventh “Outstanding Female Lawyers in Shanghai” in 2022, as well as one of the “Recommended - Individuals: Transactions” in the 2022-2023 IAM Patent 1000 rankings. Currently, she serves as the Deputy Director of the Joint Research Center for Intellectual Property Rights and Achievement Commercialisation of the National Facility for Translational Medicine (Shanghai) / Institute of Translational Medicine, SJTU; an expert of the National Overseas Intellectual Property Dispute Response & Guidance Center; a young scientist at the Shanghai Volunteers Association for Science and Technology Promotion; a supervisor at the Shanghai Data Service Provider Association. Ms. Zhang was also a delegate of the 12th Shanghai Lawyers’ Congress.

Work Experience

Ms. Zhang joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2011.

She gained her LL.B. and Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) degree from East China University of Political Science and Law. She received her LL.M. from College of Law of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She is qualified to practice law in the PRC and the State of New York.
