Areas of practice

Based in Shanghai, John Ma assists issues intertwining between IP and technology trade, including monetization of intellectual property, compliance and protection of intellectual property, commercialization of scientific and technological achievements and the management of intellectual property. He has extensive experience in the utilization of sophisticated databases and strategies to provide patent and non-patent literature analytics.  

His work experience encompasses various industry sectors, focusing on new energy batteries and NEVs, polymers, pharmaceutics, medical devices, AI and robotics as well as the food industry.

Clients, especially their R&D sector, turn to Mr. Ma because of his profound understanding of IP in R&D. He uses patent analytics to advise on R&D roadmap, IP management policy, prosecution and portfolio strategies while also resolving issues about ownership arrangements, inventor remuneration systems and incentive mechanisms for C-suite personnel.

He has an in-depth understanding of clients’ IP needs in business transactions, including IP due diligence, freedom-to-operate investigation, IP risk assessment, and technology evaluation for investment. He’s been working in areas such as merge and acquisition, listing, private placement, joint venture, technology transfer, establishment of R&D centres, service outsourcing and strategic cooperation for more than 10 years. He is skilled in assisting clients with their listings from the technology and IP perspectives.

Work experience

Mr. Ma returned back to King & Wood Mallesons in 2022.

He received his B.S. in Biology from Fudan University in 2002, M.Phil. from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004, and M.S. from University of Maryland, College Park in 2009.

He is admitted to practise in the PRC as a patent agent.

His working languages are English and Chinese.
