Areas of practice

Ms. Cecilia X.Y. Lou specialises in intellectual property (IP) matters and cross-border technology-driven transactions, including IP commercialisation and investment, IP compliance and protection, commercialisation of scientific and technological achievements, and IP portfolio management, with particular emphasis on know-how, patent and trademark licensing in M&A deals, cross-border transactions, and technology import/export control related issues, etc. She has over 25 years' work experience in the following technical areas or industries: manufacturing and electronic industry, aircraft and aviation, energy, new materials, steel and alloys, semi-conductor manufacturing and equipment, medical device, computer & data technology, health management, food and fast-moving consumer goods industry, chemical engineering, bio-information technology, pharmaceutical industry, etc.

Ms. Lou is highly reputed in providing advisory services on IP strategic planning to clients for business actions, including the comprehensive advisory services on mergers and acquisitions, IPO, private equity investment, joint ventures, technology transfer, establishment of R&D centres and the IP policy, outsourcing and strategic cooperation, etc. Ms. Lou specialises in assisting clients in formulating patent filing strategies and ownership arrangements, and the awards and compensation mechanism for inventors and incentive plan for core personnel. She also provides business sorting and assessment on the inventiveness steps for the key technology of companies or their innovation for listing applications.

 Ms Lou has extensive experience in IP mapping and dispute resolution, particularly in the areas of patents, trademarks, trade dress and trade secrets. She also represents clients in negotiations with respect to the development of effective intellectual property policy, particularly those relating to service inventions, confidentiality and non-competition that affect international dealings.

Work Experience

Ms. Lou received her Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Dalian University of Technology in 1992, majoring in Engine and minoring in Electronic Technology. She obtained her LLM in Intellectual Property Law from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 2008, and her EMBA from Fudan University in 2021.

Ms. Lou joined King & Wood Mallesons in 2006. She is a Board Member of Licensing Executives Society (LES) China and Shanghai Intellectual Property Services Association (SIPSA), and a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and International Trademark Association (INTA).
