King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) has partnered with Walanga Muru – Macquarie University to support the education and career development of Indigenous law students.

The firm has launched a formal mentoring program, beginning mid-August 2017, which will initially support four Indigenous law students at Walanga Muru – Macquarie University.

Each student will be allocated two mentors, a junior and a senior lawyer, with the aim of providing genuine insights into life in the legal industry as well as an additional layer of support from differing career perspectives.

KWM National Diversity Manager, Kellie Wade, said the program reflects KWM and Walanga Muru – Macquarie University's shared vision to encourage and support greater diversity in the legal sector.

"As a firm we are passionate about creating opportunities which generate diversity of thought.  This mentoring program aligns strongly with our inclusion agenda and the commitments made in our Reconciliation Action Plan. It will provide Indigenous students with practical advice and assistance during their studies which in turn will help to set them up for a successful and positive career in law."

KWM will look to extend this program in 2018 by partnering with other universities.
