Competition, Trade & Regulatory - UK

We go further to get you where you want to be

Competition, trade and regulatory laws are evolving all the time and their impact on business strategy is increasing. We offer expert competition and antitrust advice that will help you navigate the changing global market.

Across Europe, China and Australia, regulatory authorities are now exercising a broad range of powers to investigate commercial arrangements between competitors, distributors and suppliers, cartels, mergers, and abuses of dominant market positions. Companies are treading carefully: preparing and planning ahead for impending regulatory reforms. It is now more important than ever to ensure that your competition law compliance affairs are in order.

As our client, you benefit from our lawyers’ expertise in EU regulatory and competition law. With former regulators as partners, we understand the policy drivers too.

This means our competition lawyers see opportunities where others see only the status quo. We do not just defend your interests, we actively pursue them. And that is what keeps you in front.

A leader in EU regulatory and competition law, we feature regularly in Global Competition Review's GCR 100, a survey of the world's leading competition firms. And we have won UK Competition Team of the Year in the Legal Business Awards three times.

High-profile experience

We frequently act on very high-profile matters, including EU and national merger clearances, cartels, market investigations, competition enquiries and monopoly cases. We also have a cutting-edge EU/competition law litigation practice, acting in both national and EU courts.

Our practice spans not only competition, but also EU law. We have the leading merger arbitrage practice in Europe; an active regulatory practice in pharmaceuticals, life sciences, communications, media and technology, energy and infrastructure; and a highly experienced trade law practice.

The clients who benefit from this expertise include Universal Music Group, whom we advised on its successful £1.2 million acquisition of EMI’s recorded music division from Citigroup. We successfully obtained clearance for the deal from the European Commission and in six other jurisdictions. For this work, we were awarded The Lawyer’s Competition Team of the Year 2013.

Other highlights include advising:

  • Major FTSE 100 companies on dawn raids undertaken by the OFT and the European Commission
  • Advising RBS on the competition law issues raised by the various high-profile regulatory investigations into LIBOR. We are assisting and coordinating with the bank’s advisors elsewhere in the world both in relation to competition law and regulatory issues
  • Simon & Schuster, one of the Big Five global publishers, in connection with the European Commission’s investigation into e-books – work for which we were awarded the GCR Behavioural Team of the Year 2013
  • HTC on its licensing dispute with IPCom, which was set to be one of The Lawyer’s leading litigation matters for 2013 – until we successfully had the case adjourned.
"The firm appears in almost all of the significant competition cases for good reason."
